Here’s a quick and easy seasonal update for the owls and dogs.

With the addition of a simple black witch’s hat and a spookier-than-usual colour palette, the owls are ready for trick-or-treating, or just hanging around on some twisty branches with the rest of your Halloween decorations.

The pattern for the owls is here.

The sketches below are a guide for drawing the templates, but you can change the shape or size.

Have fun!

Draw a paper template using the photo as a guide. The hat to fit an owl is approximately 7.5cm wide at the brim, and 5cm tall. Cut out two of the shapes in black felt. Blanket stitch them together using one strand of thread.

Position the hat on the back of the owl so that the tips of the ears stick up a little past the brim. Secure the base of the hat at the centre with a few stitches. Turn to the front and stitch the hanging loop to the hat, then cover the join by stitching on the button.

This fun pumpkin shaped beret makes a quick and easy Halloween costume for Mitzi the Dachshund or any of the dog patterns. You can find the Dachshund pattern here.

Draw a paper template using the photo as a guide. The hat to fit a Dachsund is approximately 4.5cm wide and 2.5cm tall.

Cut out a front and back from orange felt. The easiest way to make the pieces match is to use the back template to cut two layers of felt, then take the front piece and use the front template to cut the lower edge. Cut the little stalk from a scrap of brown felt.

Using one strand of thread, blanket stitch along the lower edge of the back, then continue stitching both pieces together. Insert the base of the stalk into the seam at the top. Finish by stitching along the lower edge of the front.

To prevent it falling off and getting lost, you can sew a loose thread between the hat and the back of the ornament.
